Doug Delaney reading to a Readers 2 Leaders student
Volunteer and former teacher, Doug Delaney, shares why he volunteers with us:
It was really a wonderful experience to read to those youngsters and see the joy that could come when they simply read books for pleasure.
What I gained through volunteering with R2L is an opportunity to make an impact with youngsters at a critical time when reading and learning to read and being excited about reading is so important for them. I taught middle school English for three years, and working with kids at the 7th and 8th grade level gave me the opportunity to see that we needed to reach out to them earlier.
The [R2L] mission is important because I believe that it works. There is a strong phonics program built into Readers 2 Leaders and as a volunteer I was privileged to, one a day week, read with the kids, while they engaged in phonics with their teachers [the rest of the week], so that there was this combination of activities for them - and I think it works.
We are grateful for the contributions made by these corporations that help make our work possible.
